Low sex drive in men is a persistent lack of interest in sex or sexual thoughts that causes distress to the man or his partner. It is different from erectile dysfunction, although the two can occur together. Causes include low testosterone, high prolactin, depression, some medicines, relationship problems and ageing.

- An examination to look for another problem, especially erectile dysfunction.
- Hormone tests, such as fasting morning testosterone, and prolactin when needed.
How is it treated?
- Treat the cause: for example testosterone therapy when a deficiency is confirmed with its symptoms, or treating high prolactin.
- Review medicines that may reduce desire with the doctor who prescribed them.
- Psychological and couple therapy, such as cognitive behavioural therapy, which may help although evidence is limited.
- Lifestyle: enough sleep, exercise and less stress.
When should you see a doctor?
- If low desire lasts more than a few months.
- If it comes with erectile problems, fewer morning erections or persistent tiredness.
- If it started after a new medicine.

Frequently asked questions
Does low sex drive mean low testosterone?
Not always. Low testosterone is a known cause, but depression, anxiety, relationship problems, tiredness and some medicines are common causes too. The doctor tests hormones when symptoms suggest it.
Can antidepressants reduce sex drive?
They can in some men. Do not stop the medicine yourself; discuss changing the dose or the medicine with your doctor.
Is low desire different from erectile dysfunction?
Yes. Low desire is reduced interest in sex; erectile dysfunction is difficulty getting a firm enough erection. They can occur together, and the doctor works out which is the main problem.
