Masturbation itself does not cause permanent erectile dysfunction, and there is no scientific evidence that it damages erectile tissue. Guilt and anxiety linked to it can, however, cause psychological erectile problems. If the problem continues, finding the real cause matters, because erectile dysfunction can have a physical cause even in young men.

Does masturbation affect erections?
Erections depend on healthy blood vessels, nerves, hormones and mental state. Studies do not show that masturbation harms these systems. What many men link to it usually comes from:
- Anxiety and guilt, common causes of psychological erectile dysfunction.
- Watching for an erection and fear of failure before sex or early in marriage.
- An undiagnosed physical cause such as diabetes, low testosterone or smoking.
What about pornography?
A 2019 scientific review found that most evidence on pornography and sexual problems comes from cross-sectional studies and case reports, which cannot prove that viewing is the cause. Some men still notice difficulty becoming aroused with a partner or delayed ejaculation, which can be discussed privately with a doctor.
Weaker erections after stopping
There is no evidence that stopping masturbation weakens erections; the cause is usually anxiety and anticipation. A reassuring sign is having morning erections, which usually means the erection mechanism is working.
When should you see a doctor?
- If erectile problems last more than a few weeks.
- If morning erections disappear or clearly weaken.
- If there is also low desire or persistent tiredness.
- If anxiety stops you from having sex or affects your life.
