Erection problems at the start of marriage or on the wedding night are very common. They are usually caused by stress, performance anxiety and tiredness, not a physical disease, and most men improve with patience, understanding and no rush. If problems last for weeks, or morning erections are absent, a medical assessment is worthwhile.

Why does it happen early in marriage?
- Performance anxiety: fear of failure releases stress hormones that work against erections.
- Tiredness after days of preparation, the celebration and little sleep.
- Unrealistic expectations from friends or the internet.
- Shyness and inexperience in both partners.
The anxiety cycle
It often starts with one time when the erection did not work; fear grows the next time and the erection weakens further. Breaking this cycle is the basis of treatment.
Practical tips
- Do not set a deadline for full intercourse; take time for closeness and foreplay.
- Talk calmly with your wife; understanding eases the pressure on both of you.
- Sleep well and avoid alcohol and smoking.
- Do not buy tablets of unknown origin or “natural” products, which may contain hidden drugs. Read about herbs and supplements.
When should you see a doctor?
- If the problem lasts more than a few weeks.
- If morning erections are absent or weak.
- If you have diabetes, high blood pressure, smoke or have other illnesses.
- If anxiety starts to affect the marriage.
After an assessment the doctor can combine behavioural advice with short-term medicine when needed, and psychosexual therapy for the couple may help.
If penetration is difficult despite an erection
The cause may be on the wife’s side, such as anxiety, vaginal muscle spasm or pain during sex. These are common, treatable conditions that need a gynaecologist’s assessment.
